I have just made a jacket. No problem .:rolleyes2
Nice pattern. No problem there.
Lovely fabric. No problem there either.
But the jacket made up in that fabric just doesn't work.:undecided
It fits okay, it just isn't me.

Sorry, can't offer any words of wisdom or help, I struggle sewing buttons on
My daughters get their sewing ability from me. Eldest made a dress to wear to her prom in gcse textiles. Cost me quite a bit for the material, about 5 times more for something she could wear to the prom without being a laughing stock, and even the dog doesn't want it as he shoves it to the end of his bed so he doesn't have to lie on it...

I just keep looking at it on the hanger and it looks great, but when I put it on it looks horrible. Just not me.

I gave up dressmaking for a similar reason. Whenever I made something, even if I liked it, DH would sniff slightly and say that "it would make a good table cloth". After a while you lose confidence in your fabric choosing ability!Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

I may alter the style of it and add a contrasting colour.
I need to think on it for a while before I admit defeat.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

For my daughter's wedding I bought a Vogue designer pattern for a trapeze-shaped jacket, which I made in silk dupion, struggling with the vilely behaved fabric - I had to cut my own facing for the hem to make it hang properly.
I hated it on me. I ended up making a second, much simpler jacket. The first jacket sat on a hanger glaring at me (me glaring back) for months. It is now off the hanger, folded up, and at some point I shall have to decide what to do with it. Expensive silk dusters, anyone?0 -

I think you have to put it away for at least a few days, but your instinct is, sadly, probably right.
The tricky bit is not losing your nerve, and making the next garment. I was really rattled by so mis-judging my ***ing jacket that I made a tried and tested pattern before getting back to choosing a new pattern and fabric.0 -
Oh Rikki! I'm so sorry, it's so upsetting when that happens. I think wendym is right, though, try putting it away in the wardrobe for a week or two and then have a look at it, you may decide you like it after all.
Or maybe experiment with the length/sleeve length/buttons, etc, maybe a small change will make all the difference. Or maybe you may just get completely hacked off with it and throw it in the recycling bin - the American sew-ers call this a 'wadder', because you wad it up in a ball and chuck it - we've all done it, I'm afraid
Good luck with the next venture, don't get too downhearted.
