Independant Kitchen Design

Hi, I don't want to pay mega bucks but I'd like someone to do an kitchen design to make the best possible use of what space we have.

I had designs done by howdens etc last time and they were just yes men.

Anyone on here have any recommendations or know someone who does this?

99.9% of folks would trawl round to get designs done FOC. If you are ruling out Howdens, that still means you can get trade help from Magnet Trade, Tradepoint, Benchmarx or any local builders merchant with a kitchen show area.

The rule of thumb is the trade locations will give you a better hearing than the DIY sheds, simply because they know they have to treat people with professionalism and knowledge. This does not mean they are great but you will be able to form some conclusions.

Use the Ikea online planner, to try and do it yourself.

Its a bit clunky at first, but actually works well.

You dont need to go to the store, or talk to anyone, just play around with it and see what works for you.

Then go toIkea, or competitor with your plans, for their opinions.

Plus it prices it individually, each tem, so you can see where to cut costs.

Most independent retailers offer a free design service. Get them to in and have a look at their suggestions. You can always go elsewhere then with the ideas. Although I personally find independent retailers offer much better higher wauskutt products.

You shouldn't write off the dozens of Howdens' designers because you met one of them and didn't like their approach. You'll meet all kinds of designers if you do your homework thoroughly, and of course, some will be less good.

We didn't find any pattern. Two people in the same outfit, visited on different days, could give quite different advice.

Howdens gave us the best design experience, but we got a local independent to make and fit it because their deal at the quality/price point was better. Their sales man was a 'Yes' person, but the fitters were superb. Ultimately, they're the ones who count as much as the designer.

Incidentally, I have two branches of Howdens equidistant to me, but I only use the one now, because the attitude of staff at the other one is sadly lacking. It's like any institution; the manager will make all the difference.
