Aftermarket Stereo and Resale Value

Hi,

Just a quick bit of advice required. I swapped out the stereo in my 2008 BMW 3-series for an aftermarket one with bluetooth/DAB/etc.

I'm now coming to sell the car and wonder if it's worth taking the aftermarket stereo back out and putting the original back in to help increase the trade-in or resale value

I'd like to keep the aftermarket unit if I can to put in the wife's car, but if it will increase the value of my BMW i can suck it up and buy her a new one.

Thoughts appreciated.

Unlikely to increase the cars value. If you want to keep it, take it out.

On a decade-old car, a hundred quid of aftermarket stereo is going to make zero difference. The overall condition of the car, and the history with it, will be FAR more relevant. It might put some people off, it might encourage others. but it's really very minor.

You're unlikely to get your money back on the aftermarket if you include it, so if you like it stick the original one back in and put the aftermarket in your new car.

Mods are more likely to put people off IMO so I'd replace the original

Whatever radio you have will make zero difference on a car of that age.

Afternarket stereo would put me off. I would be thinking how much would it cost to replace with a genuine one.

Unless the genuine units had a lot of issues and common to replace. Some insurers will class the stereo as a mod and wont touch it.

Definitely put the OEM stereo back in. When my insurer valued my Lupo, they told me that they consider any aftermarket stereo, a downgrade and valued the CD Player I had installed at £0.00. The tape player which came with the car, they said, was worth £50 (???). As such, I drove over to their salvage depot, collected the CD player and gave them the tape deck. I didn't even have to install it, I just put it on the seat and the offer was increased by £50. Definitely worth the detour on the way to work :)
