New credit card after previous default

I was wondering if anyone with experience of defaulting on a credit card has had success in being approved by the same bank after the 6 year reporting period with Experian etc has passed and the default has dropped off? Or even before then? Both in the case of fully settling the debt, or only partially settling / not repaying the debt at all.

Curious as to whether the banks would just do the usual online checks as to credit score, or whether they also store specific information on a past customer who defaulted and may well be 'black balled' for a long period of time or indefinately.

I defaulted on my CCs with Barclays and Capital One about 3 years ago and both were partially settled. Not tried to apply again as my credit score is still recovering, but would be interesting to know if anyone has had success getting credit from a bank with whom they have previously defaulted.

Not a bank as such though I got a Barclays initial a few years ago after a rbs card default -was months after the 6 years.

Excellent as Barcays offered a greatly reduce apr card when I called to cancel approx 18mths later.

Thanks for the link SnowTiger. Interesting read, seems it is a bit hit and miss as to Barclays saying no to previous 'bad behaviour'.

I wonder if Capital One are the same.

Why don't you just try elsewhere? Plenty of other providers.

You can always apply, but they can always say no. Alas when it comes to this sort of thing it is a bit of a black art because officially while your credit history will be clean, there's nothing stopping these guys from having your picture on a dartboard, so to speak.

    .

Banks will carry out various checks but one thing they definitely will not look at is your credit score.

    Hi

I would suggest you do the MSE credit card checker, it runs a soft search on your file and lets you know how likely you are to be accepted. It's worked for me before.

MSE Credit checker for me is a waste of time.

After reading there % chances of being approved it looked like i couldn't get anything credit wise.

Odd that when i looked at the Noodle/Clear Score and Giffgaff CRA that each one recommended id have a good chance 60% upto 80% of being approved for a non sub prime card.

Took a chance thinking id be laughed at by the Computer..what a shock when approved for not Only a Tesco long term (for me) 0% balance transfer card, when i then applied for Barclay card Platinum 0% Balance transfer i was shocked when not only approved but had a £3500 limit.

Then only a few days ago chanced my luck with the M&S account Bribe offer...Bingo accepted.

Had i carried on assuming MSE credit checker was true reflection id still have mega High APR cards and a Basic bank account.

Take MSE checker with very large pinch of Salt.
