No Credit History

Hi
This is my first post, Although I've been browing the site for a while and found out some very useful stuff so thanks!
Im posting now though as i've hit a brick wall with what im trying to do. Im a 27 year old with no credit history at all, I would like to build a credit record so i can get a mortgage in a couple of years or so.
As i have no history I've tried applying for a couple of these high rate cards like vanquis and capital one as advised on this site, but both have just refused me so I dont know what to do next.. how can i get credit to build a history if nobody will give me any to start with?
I am of course on the electoral roll etc and I've looked at all my credit reports which are fine (no CIFAS etc) but no payments history at all. My bank account doesnt appear on any of them either, and is the only thing I have, or have ever had, that possibly would.
Is there another small line of credit I can definitly get that will report onto my file? As it stands I'm stuck, and nervous of applying for anything else in case I get rufused again and get too many searches on file.
