OP said that there are seven people involved, if all seven pay it is £1,500 each coming to a total of £10,500 or if only five pay it is £2,500 each coming to a total of £12,500. I'm not quite sure why it will cost an extra £2,000 for the total with everyone paying a share, seems odd that the total price would differ depending on how many pay.

    OP + 7 other property owners = 8

    8 x 1.5k =12k, guess the other £500 is rounding.

In this situation I would be looking at it not from a legal perspective, as that could be costly and definately ruin relationships, but from a common sense perspective.

You have said you live at the far end and would benefit from this, along with two other houses. There are 2 houses that don't use the drive. If they genuinely don't use the drive then surely trying to make them pay would be a tad unfair.

Why not try to agree bands. You and the other 2 at the far end pay £2k, the 2 that don't use the drive £750, the other 3 £1.5k. Try to make it More fair based on usage, then you might have more joy with acceptance and maintaining relationships.

    Regardless of their use....

House value with a shared drive that is in a state of repair vs value with a shared drive that is in good repair.

If one was looking at buying a house, if you saw a shared drive that was in a state - you would instantly want to reduce the value of the house to compensate, just like if you saw a dodgy roof.

So maybe the neighbours wont be selling anytime soon - if the drive is past just 'maintenance' to bring it up to standard, once you get the 10k or whatever work done, it maybe just regular payments of a few hundred pounds to keep it to a good standard for when the neighbours do sell.

And after all, all the houses were bought with that condition in the deeds, they should have known about the implications of a shared driveway.
