I'm trying to negotiate a decent deal with BT for my fibre broadband, phone and maybe tv. My question is; do I really need their TV (currently BT vision, which is about to be switched off and replaced with a YouView box) for an extra £6 on top of already daylight-robbery prices, or; as I will have unlimited fibre broadband, can I simply plug my laptop into my tv and watch catch-up, stream Netflix, etc with that? Is the box necessary, or just convenient?

In the case of BT, Plusnet and Talktalk, I believe that not only do you not need to take the Youview box to access streaming video (Netflix et al), but a TV contract is not even needed to use your own Youview box for the free players (BBC, ITV, C4, C5 and UKTV).
Depending on your set-up, having some kind of TV-based streaming device is more convenient than connecting a laptop, but there are lots of options for that from a NowTV box to Apple TV.0
