Hi my daughter yesterday received a notification telling her there was not tax on her car. In fact the notice asked her if the car had been off road or not. on checking she found that it should have been renewed on Jan 1st. surprisingly there had been no other notification since Jan ? Panicking she paid as from 1st May. unfortunately there is no means to pay from Jan. she is now wondering how much of a fine she will receive? and would it be better to say"its been off road" sorry should have declared a SORN.?
or should she just phone DVLA and come clean, having not received any reminder.
I wonder how many thousands have fallen into the same dilemma
any guidance appreciated NB: where she normally parks at night is technically off road

Post your local DVLA office, explain you missed the reminder and ask how much she owes for the interim period and pay that amount. I did that and got away because I had not been pinged by an ANPR camera. Is the car registered at the correct address?

A similar thing happened to my other half a few years back. The reminder never arrived and she drove around blissfully unaware (despite this being in the days of the tax disc) that her car was untaxed. She got a fine (I think £80) through the post from the DVLA and also had to pay for the tax that she'd missed. As she then also realised her MOT had expired I think we were thankful that it was just the fine for the tax that she'd ended up with.

What happened to the renewal notice she would have received in early December?

Thanks for the replies guys, there was no reminder?
The thing is she`s scared to say the words, I`ve been using it since Dec with no tax ? she feels its better to say its been off road (lie)

My reminder was via text message. She should put a reminder on her phone for the future, or pay monthly for her tax if she won't remember (as that way it'll just carry on).

Just a thought, has she re-MOT'd her car?

And she's definitely the registered keeper, with a V5C in her name at her current address?

Even so, whether the reminder arrived or not, it's still 100% her responsibility to ensure her car is legal - taxed, insured, tested.

If she can't do that without a colourful piece of paper in the windscreen, then it's not hard to make one. Or to just keep track in the calendar on her phone or whatever...

There's nothing more she can do. She's taxed it now. It's really just a case of waiting for any penalty, and pay it.

It doesn't matter where it was, (on or off road) it needed to be taxed unless it was subject of a SORN.

Oh, and - yes - they do. They send the renewal notification early-ish in the month of expiry. So she would have received one probably about 10th Dec for a 31st Dec expiry.

They don't then send anything AFTER that... Because that's all you need, right?
