BT has finally sent me the giftcard they promised (there's a whole thread on my travails with BT elsewhere) i'm planning to put towards a laptop to replace a PC with is on its last legs and taking up too much room.
Having wandered around the threads and taken on board the general weight of i'm looking at getting something refurbished rather than new. (we don't do anything particularly clever on the PC, manage music, photo's, surf the web, etc)
Has anyone used newandusedcomputers4u on ebay? lots of threads cite examples from their site, their feedback is decent.
Also, 1tb hard drive or 120 solid state?
and would you go Lenovo thinkpad or Dell Latitude?
(or even HP elitepad?)
I was looking to spend £200-£250.
Ta.

Havent used newandusedcomputers4u
120 solid state for performance (you can add 64GB usb plugs or external HDD if you need storage)
Id go for the latitude - great solid machines
Good luck0 -

Ta, i'm old fashioned and years of PC ownership and filing it up with the day-to-day detritus of using a PC makes me want to go 1tb. I'm am willing to bet that everyone tells me to SSD?0 -
Look at Microdream (Windows 10 only) and Morgan Computers (still some Windows 7). Our charity buys second-hand Lenovo T520s and T530s from them.0

The biggest ssd I have read about a number of years ago was 16TB, while traditional was 10TB
Lenovo are very well built, possibly the second most robust laptop there is (original Panasonic Tough Book must be number one though, but imho they had underrated cpu? and were marketed for toughness and not reliability)
However the older Lenovos have no hdmi output, and only bluetooth v2, Not a full hd screen. For you this may be a deal killer.0 -
For you sir would especially recommend ssd, due to the fact they are robust and vibration proof -solid state, and will make your battery last longer, plus generate less heat.

Good points, the hdmi output isn't necessarily a deal breaker but the bluetooth might be an issue, i've an idea that this might be something that wasn't necessarily standard. the adverts on ebay seem to be generic info...will have to ask, thanks again.0 -
What screen size and CPU are you considering?
I think you have to weigh up the VALUE to you of SSD in comparison to the other specs you are after, you may want a particular screen size or CPU and be prepared to add SSD later.
I have installed an SSD on a Vista system with low ram and it only really felt improvement in startup, there was still a lag when it wrote to disk for the page file. Obviously not as bad as with a traditional hard disk and also Vista was a dog of an OS.
Consider that you can get one later for £45, so if you have a number of options and the difference in spec for SSD is more than £45 perhaps fit it yourself. You can always put the traditional disk in an external USB case for under £7
I have one laptop with a duff DVD so I am getting a caddy for it for £6 on ebay and recycling that SSD, I am curious to see how much it actually improves as I have a number of identical laptops of different specs of Ram and CPU, certainly a lot of SSD fans on here.
It may be worth you looking at the Dell outlet, bear in mind these are almost all as new with cheaper ones being scratch and dent category.

Whatever manufacturer and model you choose fit is worth looking for reviews and youtube videos. Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0 -
You can usually add bluetooth and Wireless AC card as an upgrade, look on YouTube for how hard it is, I would value HDMI quite highly now. Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0

If you can compromise on screen size, this one has a Full HD screen, backlit keyboard and Windows 10 Pro(as opposed to Home); http://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-latitude-e5450-i5-5300u-2-3ghz-8gb-500gb-14-fhd-win-10-pro-1yr-rtb-wty-mll514/
Though slightly over budget.0 -
If you are traveling east, or even to N. america, their computer products seem far cheaper than Blighty, perhaps you want to buy new there?0
