Bedroom in a multi story flat and a fire breaks out....how's a window going to help?

I should think you'd be grateful for it when you're waving to the alert the firemen that can come up in breathing apparatus.

I don't think people are being sensible here. Given the choice of a room with a window or no window...

In Scotland we have a minimum daylight requirement in the regs for apartments, but I don't think that's the case down south, however I've never been asked to design a bedroom with no windows!
You need a means of escape and have ventilation requirements to consider, but the real issue is - would you want to live in a room like that.
It would maybe be a better solution to open up the room to have a bigger room with some natural light and use a partial divider to segregate areas...

My new double glazed wooden sash windows (listed building requirements) all have a means to swing open vertically as a means of escape. Mind you, it's so fiddly to do that I'm not convinced that I'd be able to do it in an emergency.

    Might go and practice!

I have a vague recollection from when I built my house many, many years ago. That you didn't have to have a window. But, if you did, it had to be a certain size or have a certain ratio of window opening area to window total area.
But, ignore me. As it was so long ago, that I have probably got it completely wrong.
