Good advice from trailingspouse. Have a look at the kitchen planner from IKEA. It's free and easy to navigate. You can play around with it to your heart's content and it will flag up if there isn't enough space.
    Worth a try.
If you live near an IKEA, go in and start playing with a kitchen design in the kitchen department. If you go at a time which isn't busy, then one of the guys who work there will be more than happy to help. They are great at it and good at suggesting ways around tricky spaces. No obligation from them. You don't have to buy anything and you don't feel any pressure whatsoever to order anything.
In other stores they can give you a bit of a hard sell and make you feel awkward about using their services but not purchasing from them.
And I know that IKEA sizes are a wee bit different from other cupboards, but it is a great tool and can give you a good idea of what may work.
Also there is the added bonus of seeing lots of kitchens, of different sizes and shapes, already set up so you can get an idea of sizes which work or not.

Can you use a dining table to place in the exact position, then use the kitchen to see if the space or lack of space will work for you. If no table, buy a piece of cheap ply or plaster board and cut to size.

When looking to add an island to our kitchens (past and present), we have previously created mock ups using large boxes in order to see how much space we would be left with for aisles.....
