Good Morning Money Saving Family!
I hope you're all well, and everyone enjoyed an amazing Bank Holliday Weekend!
I'm posting this as I know absolutely nothing about cars and as someone who previously struggled with large debt problems, I don't want to retrace old steps.
I currently drive a Citroen C1 which I absolutely love. It's small econminal, and cheap, all things I love.
However recently I have taken a new job which means on occasion I am required to drive longer distances. This can be 50 - 150 mile round trips which at the moment I struggle with in my current car. Unfortunately, work is not going to give me a company car but will pay 30p per mile traveled. Needless to say, I want to find something cheap and economical which will last me through the next few years. Ideally, it would still be a small car.
I really appreciate anyone who gets back to me.
Thank you so much!!
Simon

Why can't you do a 50 - 150 mile trip in a C1?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

I possibly can, it's just at 70mph it feels a little unsteady at times.
Do you drive one too?0 -
Then drive 60mph. No one force you to drive 70 on motorway...
BTW, you need to tell people what your budget is if you need new car...0 -
As above, drive at a speed you feel comfortable at, as long as it's a safe, legal speed.
As a further point, you may be able to claim a tax benefit from the difference between the mileage rate your employer pays you (30p) and HMRC's recommended figure (45p I think?). People with more knowledge than me will be able to advise, but at least look into it.0 -
Even the most basic C1 will exceed the motorway limit by more than 20mph and be perfectly safe maintaining 70mph. If you don't feel confident driving it that fast, drive it more slowly.
I've got a 30 year old VW van that barely makes it to 65mph flat out, I'm quite happy driving that on the motorway, I can still overtake lorries trundling along at 56.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Will work supply a pool or hire car? Many years ago I was obliged to use the pool cars to go to our head office, a nearly 150 mile round trip.. Once refused one as it was unsafe, another time there wasn't one available. When asked if I could use my own I had to gently decline as I wasn't insured for it..
In the end I recall I used a colleague's company car.0 -

I used to do a 300mile round trip every weekend in a 107 and found 70mph a bit noisy, so used to just trundle at 60mph and found it quite relaxing.0
