  • Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment. I think renting is best. However, DH thinks it's waste of money and I'm having a hard time trying to convince the man as he is now exhausted with the search. What will renting do to our mortgage offer which has already come through? Will renting actually be a waste of money in any way? Regarding the exchange, that will take place this week. Please share you thoughts. Many thanks again.

Yeah, at the moment I'd rent, especially if you don't have wildly specific needs for location around school etc. After losing one sale, some friends have recently moved into a small rental place having sold their house so they don't have the stress of being mid-chain again, and so they can look at a leisurely pace for what they want, though they have the advantage of downsizing as well. But given prices are fairly static round our way it's a good option right now.

Re, is renting a waste of money - as I have seen said here, it is paying for a roof above your head. And it is also paying towards you perhaps being more likely to land the place you want to buy because you're not in a chain. It will be a faff, but hopefully after that you can stay put in your next place for a good while!
  • Everyone appears to be assuming that "the areas you want" are not the areas you are already living in. For the avoidance of doubt, why are you moving, and are you aiming to move to a location away from where you currently live?

We moved into a holiday let but agreed a huge discount. We are renting it for one month initially but could potentially be there for upto 8 weeks. We calculated our current housing cost including utility bills. Deducted cost of storage and emailed a load of potential homes on airbnb and vrbo requesting discounts to the tune of the amount we had to spend. Had 6 agree, negotiated more on not having a cleaning service and using our own beddings. Knocked another £30 off per month from the one we finally went with.
