Creaking from steering wheel?

Hi all,

Just wondering if someone can shed some light. I recently bought a Fiat 500. The issue is the steering, when turning at low speeds i.e when parking or going around a tight bend there seems to be a loud creaking sound coming from the steering wheel. Any ideas as to what this can be?

plastic cowling around the column rubbing under the wheel is a favourite for that.

It isn't unfortunately. I bought it second hand from a dealer. It's not long had it's MOT with only a few minor advisories. Test drove it and all seemed fine. Starting to think I've been ripped off...

Ha ha ripped off because the steering wheel is rubbing on the cowl? WOW!

Just have a look and adjust the cowl until it stops!

Alright haha admittedly I'm not the greatest when it comes to understanding cars :o I had a google and read it could be something more serious so it got me worrying. Will have a look a little later and report back.

A bit of furniture polish sprayed into the gap may do the trick, it worked on my squeaky seats.

it may be more than that though.... plenty of talk about similar issue on fiat forums.
  • Hi, did you get yours sorted?

I have a 2011 Fiat 500 I bought second hand last year. Beautiful car but nothing but trouble since I got it. The last month or so I've had this exact noise you're describing whenever I'm turning corners to manoeuvre, or when I'm reversing and turning to park against the kerb.

Mine only just started that I know of, or at least noticed, when we got the drier and warmer weather. I'm in Scotland.

I'm googling and googling and seeing all sorts.

    Thank you
