From LPG to Mains

Hi, we are first time buyers and were going to place an offer when we noticed that the central heating in the property is supplied by LPG.
We have never used LPG, the house was built with mains gas installed.
Are we able to convert back to mains gas and what will we need to check with the seller to make sure we are able to do this?

Sorry if seemingly stupid questions but this has totally stumped us!

Thanks :)

I can't imagine why anyone on mains gas would use LPG. Any idea why? Ask the vendor on your next visit.

I imagine conversion would be straight-forward, but you could ask gas engineers on this forum here if the boiler would be compatible.

I would rather get an ASHP than mains gas, with the RHI subsidy it's basically free as well.

ASHP over LPG in terms of lower running costs, but mains gas would win for me hands down any day of the week.

I can't see why anyone would swap mains gas for LPG. Worth checking that it's not just a kitchen hob or fireplace that was easier to run off LPG rather than repiping from the mains gas supply.

But definitely ask the vendors, as there may be more to it.

Have you checked whether mains gas is actually available? If so, the next step is to find out the cost of connection, if you're house is fairly close to the supply it shouldn't cost too much, BUT, if not, it can be expensive!

I swapped from LPG to mains when I bought my place, because of the distance from the supply it cost me a few grand to get connected, you'll also need to check if the boiler is suitable, mine had been converted TO LPG, so it was straightforward to convert it back. You will also need to pay a Gas Safe engineer connect the boiler to the mains, so siting the meter is an important consideration when it comes to putting in the pipe work.

Mains gas is so much cheaper, I've been in my place about 6.5 yrs and almost recouped the costs of converting :)
