    Great, thanks very much.
  • I realise that. It was a reinforcement of the point that logbooks don't record ownership.

    https://www.gov.uk/valuing-estate-of-someone-who-died/assets

At most, half of its value forms part of the estate for the purposes of IHT.

https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/sorting-out-the-estate-when-there-is-a-will discusses the issue of joint tenancy vs tenants in common for the specific case of cars.
I understand your point now. As the estate is intestate the wife gets it anyway. The crucial part is insurance that may have lapsed at death.
  • Hi
I too have recently been in this situation, my husband died 8 weeks ago and he was the registered keeper for our car, but i was the main driver on the insurance and my husband was named driver. We also had another car that my husband drove.

I sent the V5 form with a covering letter to inform the DVLA of my husbands death, and his driving licence number, and asked them to register the car to myself.

I have now received the new V5 back registered to myself, and informing me that i do not have to tax the car until the 1st June, and that they would refund me the rest of the tax that we had paid up until 1st October.

I'm sorry to hear that - thanks for the pointer.

So sorry for your recent loss. Can you tell me how long it took to receive V5 and correspondence about the tax refund? I used the TellusOnce service to notify DVLA. Then I sent back V5 with a letter but not heard anything yet. It's been 5 weeks.

In my xperience the DVLA are hopeless. Phone them up and ask. They have probably lost it.

Thanks :) I called after 6 weeks and they said to wait another 2-4 weeks as it's not been done yet and they have opened a case.
