Break down cover

Options
I'm tempted to take out break down cover on my aged car. However, wouldn't it be cheaper to break down first, then take out cover? Or do they sting you hard if you go the roadside signup route...?

    No,thats the worst idea.
Why would anyone take out cover if they could just join when they needed it?

Normally, new policies do not come into force for 24 or even 48 hours precisely to prevent the abuse you suggest.

RAC will cover you if you ring after you've broken down, but the cost is much greater, plus an 'emergency call out fee'. You makes your choice and pay accordingly...

RAC via Tesco Clubcard points = £12 of Clubcard points.

RAC when you break down and take it out on the spot at the roadside, one year's membership (min £34.99) plus emergency call out charge which can be as high as £125 if its a motorway.

  • I ditched the AA after they kept putting my renewal price up by a ridiculous amount. I went to RAC as a new customer in March. I bought it through the Quidco link. Roadside, rescue & recovery was £84.99 & £50 cash back, so really it only cost me £34.99 :)
I also broke down less than a week after the cover started. Luckily I was just over 1/4 mile away from home. I figured as I've got a garage at the bottom of my road, I didn't need home start, not realising that it also applies if you're on your way home, too. Next few years, I'll use Quidco again & probably go back & forth between RAC & AA as a "new customer" to claim the cash back.
The Tesco Club card deal is a good one, too.
