Economy 10 EON tariff

Hello Everyone,

This is a post on behalf of my Mum who is 73 and feeling anxious about her electricity bill/provider.

In summary, this is (hopefully) the relevant info -

- Mum lives in a semi detached 3 bed house. She lives alone.
- The house is electric only.
- She is currently using EON economy 10 which is supposed to be the most economical as she doesn't use night storage. She was on economy 7 before.
- Cheap tariff times are 1-6am, 1-5pm and 9-11pm. She only uses it during this time except 1 hr heating at 7am.
- Typical usage last month was Day 158kw and night 374kw.
- Billing is typically £66-90 per month.
- Projected annual is spend is circa £2,000 per year.

Does this sound ok or excessive?

Thank you so much, all informed advice much appreciated.

Best,

Vasey

Does she heat the whole house or just the room(s) she is using, and what kind of heaters does she use?

That doesn't really make sense, sorry, unless you are talking about a different property (or very strangely elected to switch to E10 and had the metering, and possible house wiring and appliances, changed accordingly - but you appear to have ruled that option out)

I did a double-take myself initially, but on the basis the mum is using electric heaters switched on as and when during the day then Economy10 does make sense, possibly the best option short of getting a new system installed.

The quoted Economy10 periods would allow heating in the early morning (before getting up), through the afternoon (when the house is cooling down from the morning), and then late evening (before bed-time).

If that scenario is correct then it sounds like an Economy10 option could well be the cheapest overall tariff.

Morning Vasey82 and welcome to the Forums.

Have to admit, I'm a little confused by your post. May I ask a few questions?

Economy 10 meters were designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity for heating purposes. As you say, these are at night, during the afternoon and in the evening. The times you mention add up to 11 hours. Is this an oversight or have we given you a range of hours during which the off peak are active for 10 of these? Some meters were originally set up this way.

The usage figures you give are what I would expect with storage heaters but you say your Mum doesn't use these? Storage heaters charge up during the off peak times, retain the heat and gradually release it during the day. Using more than twice as much at night than during the day is a typical pattern for all electric properties with storage heaters. If storage heaters aren't being used, how does your Mum heat her home?

You mention your Mum was on Economy 7 before. Did she change the meter to Economy 10 or does she have a multi-rate meter with both Economy 7 for general usage and a separate part covering the heating? I'm thinking here of the Heatwise meters we used to fit in the East Midlands region. These meters are very similar to Economy 10. How many separate registers are on her meter?

You say billing is typically £66-90 a month. At the top end of this range, the annual bill should be around £1080 but you quote a spend of around £2000 a year. Does the monthly figure include all usage or is it just the amount spent on heating and hot water?

Sorry for all the questions Vasey82 and if I've misunderstood.
