Store Card Declined

in Credit cards
Was in a high street shop today which has a good sale on and made a few purchases. At the till was offered extra 10% off if I took out a store card. After going through all the forms and providing information the computer said no.
Now this does not put me up nor down but then I'm thinking will this damage my credit rating? I have never had any bad credit issues and just paid off my mortgage at the start of this month so what’s going on are the stores vetting customers so they get people who are more likely to take credit?
They said I will receive a letter explaining why I was refused but can’t think of anything and will be mad if my credit rating is stained.
Anyone else had similar?
Thanks

It will appear as a search on your credit files, which will be taken into account by any given lender.
You have no rating that could go up or down, or be stained.0 -
The biggest issue is I would have to declare this in any future credit applications if they ask "have you ever been refused credit/store card in the past".0

When do you expect to be asked that?0

worth checking your credit files to check there's nothing on there, mistake or otherwise, that could be causing this.
Credit scores are pretty meaningless, I have 999 on Experian and was refuse a mobile contract0 -
The question can indeed be asked if you are applying for a mortgage.
"Have you ever been refused a mortgage, loan or credit card"?
However, lenders (based on the systems I use now and in the past), do not see the outcome of any credit search, only the fact you were searched.0 -
Thanks all for reply's is Experian best site to check rating and does a check affect your history?0
-
All three are best as different lenders use a combination of each.
Checking your own file leaves no footprint.0 -
The refusal cannot affect something no 1 else can see, refusals arent even mentioned on the report, a search may have been carried out but thats it.0

As stated before it would not be hard for an algorithm to associate search for application (defined in the credit file) and a corresponding credit account. When there is no match, it would correspond to a refusal.0
