OP If you believe you should have £700 left at the end of the month put aside say half at the start. £350 into a savings account. Then only allow yourself to spend what is left. ALWAYS save at the start of your pay period whether monthly or weekly. Then if by chance you do have funds left at the end of it save then too.

I am a great believer in smart / simple swaps rather than giving up what you buy. e.g. changing where you buy your coffee/ type you drink/size or looking at where you can get something eg Sky movies can be got for £5 a month via Now TV if you buy a box on offer with passes whereas it costs at least double to get included with places like Virgin.

Thank you! It was payday yesterday so we transferred £800 into the savings as he was paid a bit more this month due to overtime. We've said if we "need" anything we can use money out of there but we're going to trial it this month to see how well we do.

We have Now TV and Netflix (used to have virgin media a few years ago and it was SO expensive, never again).

Good luck on the job front.

As one of the old school I would be asking do you actually need any subscription television?? I know last year TalkTalk had a great deal- if you had a TV... which I don't!!

You need to build in some treats but I would suggest looking for 241 deals, using your Tesco rewards vouchers for their deals - makes them worth x3 or x4 more.

Whatever savings you have make them work too- hopefully getting as high a rate as possible (Not easy at present!) Think the regular savings a/cs with Nationwide & the HSBC stable.

Use a CC which give you something back and pay off in full. I pay everything I can on plastic, every £5 or less adds up!

If you can't cancel the gym membership then make sure you use it as much as possible. My local leisure centre includes swim, gym and all classes in the membership so it actually works out very cheap if you go nearly everyday.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
