  • If you're a foodie like me and actually do proper cooking which doesn't involve a microwave, you'll probably find Sainsbury's better for slightly unusual ingredients.

Overall I do not find the quality of Sainsbury's to be any better than Tesco, so I prefer Tesco as it's slightly cheaper.

I have to have my say on this as I get annoyed with people who think just because Tesco have adverts with White Backgrounds they think they're cheaper.

    They're not.

Sainsburys are NOT more expensive than Tesco, and have far better quality stuff. I.e. meat and vegetables.

IMO - don't touch Tesco with a bargepole as you can get better quality stuff for cheaper at JS.

As always tho, it depends what you buy.

If you are the shopper who buys a lot of fizzy pop, cripsp, frozen pizzas nad ready meals, I reckon asda or morrisons would come out cheapest- they always have laods of offers on in these departments. bogofs & th eike.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...

We buy organic and find Tesco comes in about £15 more expensive on a weekly shop than sainsburys. Tesco is also busier and has less choice in organic.
  • I prefer Sainsburys because I find the quality of the food to be better than Tesco, but I my main reason for prefering Sainsburys is the fact it is nearer to where I live - that makes any savings instore at Tesco redundant.

    Hmmm..

I get home delivery from both. I prefer Tesco's, my wife Sainsbury's

However, one word of warning when taking on online shopping - as you don't do the picking from the shelf yourself, always always always check the sell by dates.

Bitter experience this weekend when we had a delivery that included 2x18 pack Penguins from Sainsburys.

Delivered 29th Sept 2007. Sell by date 11th August 2007

SEVEN WEEKS OUT OF DATE :naughty::naughty:

To make matters worse, my son had eaten six of them before my wife realised the date on them.

Question: Is this how sainsbury's get rid of out of date stock - slip them in the online deliveries?

How on earth is it even possible for a national store to be selling things SEVEN WEEKS out of date.

I could understand a few days, but this suggests that nobody ever checks sell-by dates at their internet warehouse

So what does this say about the quality of their other products? _pale_ _pale_

I've just run a typical shop through that website and the results were
    Tesco £24.75
    Sainsbury's £25.08
    Asda £26.83
    Ocado (?) £31.41
So Sainsbury's are 1.3% more expensive. Say I spend £30 per week, then that's 40p extra. It's 4 miles, at a cost of, say 20p per mile and I go their twice a week. £1.60 extra travelling cost.

All rather hypothetical I know, but it suggests that Sainsbury's are very marginally more expensive but it'll save me money overall.

I've added a lot more products now and I'm up to
    Tesco £37.26
    Sainsbury's £38.84
    Asda £39.68
    Ocado £49.39

That's 4% extra for Sainsbury's vs Tesco. It's still cheaper to shop there than travel to the extra distance to Tesco though.

My God, it's 00:54 on a Sunday morning and I'm doing a virtual shop! Money saving is too much fun.

It depends what you buy each week though,

I shop at Tesco manly because it is closer to home and I use a lot of vouchers there, saving myself a small fortune. I pop over to Sainsburys (about and extra 1.5 miles away) probably once per month for things I can't get at Tesco (like their tartare sauce) and their apple turnovers - which are the best IMO.

Occasionally we go to Waitrose in the next town but only if we are there for the other shops - we do not make a special trip. I find Waitrose to be expensive but it is very nice their and the food I have bought has always been lovely. Far superior to the other supermarkets.

I do like Asda but the nearest is 10 miles away so I only go if I am to be near anyway. Otherwise I wouldn't save anything.

And to be honest, while I can use my coupons at Tesco, I shall stick with it.
    3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

I use Sainsbury's because Tesco dominate the city where I live to the point where you wonder if palms are being greased in the planning department
