PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Hello Forumites! In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non-MoneySaving matters are not permitted per the Forum rules. While we understand that mentioning house prices may sometimes be relevant to a user's specific MoneySaving situation, we ask that you please avoid veering into broad, general debates about the market, the economy and politics, as these can unfortunately lead to abusive or hateful behaviour. Go to https://www.iammoving.com and you can inform most large organisations that you are on a mailing list for of your change of address, I've used it every time I've moved and it's very easy.
Congratulations and enjoy your new home!0 -
On completion day:
1) Change locks
2) Check building is secure
3) Meter readings (take pictures incase there's a dispute)
4) Check water, elec, gas working (if not you can get a headstart on sorting before you move in)
5) Get kettle and bed in if you're moving in straight away
First few days
5) Contact existing Gas & Elec & Water companies and give meter readings (you'll be on their standard rate for now)
6) Contact Council tax and get liability set up in your name
7) Take care of any repairs and decorating
8) Deep clean surfaces, carpets, cupboards, white goods etc before you get your belongings in
9) Install any new flooring and curtains (without having to move furniture)
10) Get any white goods and furniture in (so you're not maneuvering around clutter)
11) Move in! (make sure bedding and kettle are in first thing on the day you first sleep there, so when you are tired you can head straight to bed!)
First few weeks:
12) Notify DVLA, mobile phone companies, employment etc of address change
13) Research best gas / electricity / water deals and switch (no point trying to do this immediately, it takes a few days and a short period on the 'standard' rate won't break the bank)0 -
Thank you so much everyone for your very helpful advice! I will be making a bit list of places to call and sort new address with
luckily as we live with parents we have a bit of time to decorate the new house and will be moving slowly over the next couple of weeks so I have a little time.
I will find the current suppliers and give them a call tomorrow.
Thank you again, very glad I have found this forum during this process, I don't post often but there is so much helpful information on here!0 -
