A professionally drawn up will costs very little, so unless you have a tiny estate then my advice would be to actually pay a solicitor to do a proper job.

Yes this is a money saving site, but getting a will wrong can be disastrous and very expensive for your loved ones, so it it usually money well spent.

Just proof-reading a will isn't enough to make sure it's right for you.

The person making your will needs to know about your family and financial situation to make sure the will does what you want it to do without leaving it open to being challenged.

If you think it needs proof reading then it's not right for you. See a professional, false economy not to.

Someone here could (& undoubtedly won't) proof read it for you - then you go & muck up the signing/witnessing criteria & invalidate it anyway!

  • Thanks for your replies. The Will is very simple in that it specifies who inherits my assets and whom I would like to have guardianship over my children if both myself and my wife pass away.
The only thing that makes it complicated is some of the legal speak in the template. I see nothing wrong with a professional reading it through and offering advice

Free advice is worth what you pay for it. There is nuch more to drafting a will than you think. No prudent professional, or ex-professional would do what you want. Spend a couple of hundred pounds and get it done by a solicitor. Under no circumstances use a will writer or try to DIY it.

If you have minor children, all the more reason to get a professionally-written will.

If there are problems with the will, you won't know about it but your widow and children certainly will!

If you don't understand the legal jargon, then how do you expect the executors to ?
The same for a professionally written will.

When I had mine drawn up by a solicitor, I asked for a rewrite twice to make certain sections easier for a layman to understand. Clarity and precision is essential so that there is no room for misunderstanding or confusion.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Providing for your underage children does not come under the description of a simple will. It needs to be written by someone who knows what they are doing and what questions to ask you..

A simple will is - I leave everything to my spouse or I leave everything to my adult child/children with no other comments at all.

The second you wrote the words "guardianship over my children" most of us would think that's not a simple Will.

A simple Will might be a childless couple leaving everything to each other, with not a lot to leave, that's it........simple! (Even terminology such as that might leave a window open for questions or misunderstandings.)

You clearly have assets worth leaving & children to be taken care of, so do it properly. How will you check the qualifications, knowledge or experience of anyone on a forum who agrees to check it anyway?

You need professional advice and may I also suggest it would be good for your wife to get a will at the same time. We had mirror wills done and it didn't cost much more than one will. That way most eventualities are covered for.
