Downgrade Amex charge card account

As many other moneysavers, I did open an Amex gold charge card to take advantage of the sweet sign up bonus. I ended up liking the charge card product, in fact preferring it over a credit card, and I'll like to keep it alongside a Mastercard for the occasional shop that doesn't take Amex.
The card isn't worth £140 a year for me, though, but the standard green card at £60 might do, so I'm willing to downgrade it. A quick call to customer support revealed that they're willing to do a downgrade and refund the gold fee pro-rata, but it will yield an additional credit check – even if it's exactly the same product, just a different account tier.
Does anyone have an experience of downgrading an Amex charge card?

Yes ive done it between the platinum and gold depening on the points scheme, never been credit rechecked though as they seem to do it internally.0

Why not just go to the basic free chargecard that they don't actively advertise? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I know you say you prefer it to a credit card, but another option is to look at the Gold Credit Card, currently only available via Money Supermarket: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/credit-cards/american-express/
Open one of those, then close your Gold Charge account. Membership rewards, no annual fee.0
