Question even though the issue is sorted

My friend purchased a metal tv stand including shelves for sky box etc and I had the job of building it for her. Unfortunately the company who made it (not the retailer) had welded part the wrong way round making it impossible to build. We took it back the same day and the assistant manager was happy to refund her as I'd pointed out to her that apart from the welding the shelf holes were wonky as well and I didn't think it was worth the money and the one they had on display was around 6-7 foot up stuck to a wall making it hard to see before she purchased it. The store manager then came over and said the assistant shouldn't of refunded (which he had) and just replaced it re company policy. Just wondered how she stood if they said replacement only on the day of purchase?

She's entitled to a refund for faulty. (Assuming she took it back within 30 days)

They can offer to refund or replace, but the consumer can insist on a refund so soon after purchase.

As above, within 30 days she's entitled to a refund.

Thanks all! I did think that as it was on the day of purchase and with a fault they couldn't refuse but the manager said to my face when I questioned him that he wouldn't of if he'd been the one we saw first
