Do you have any other proof that you bought a ticket? If you bought it in advance online, you'll have an email. If you paid by a credit/debit card, the time/place/date of payment will be shown on your statement. If you have any proof at all, then send it with your appeal to increase your chance of success. If you paid in cash, then you're stuffed!

Will give you a yes/no for ticket gates.

But even if there are no ticket gates they may well have someone checking tickets at the exit anyway - so always retain your ticket etc until you've left the station. £404 seems quite steep though !

Although the OP describes it as a fine, I imagine that at least part of it would have been a standard single fare from the previous stop - which if it was a non-stop ling distance train could be a considerable amount.

True, I sometimes forget how far those long distance trains travel even though I often catch one down to London! Would be helpful to know what route the OP took.

Although the OP has not returned to answer any points raised I would strongly believe that not showing a ticket when they left the arrival station details were taken and a penalty fare demand was sent. The OP ignored the letter {and any that came after with the claim that if not paid within "x" time then court would be the next step.
I would believe {as it looks} the OP ignored that then the court sided with the rail operator and the total amount {including court costs} was given bringing it to the total stated.
I do not think anyone will ever know the full story so anything is just speculation

Let me give you all a small clue as to why the OP hasn't returned.

Were you aware the Oxford dictionary has removed the word gullible this year?
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.
