Nail polish on carpet

My mother came round to stay for a few days. She dropped a small bottle of nail polish onto the spare bedroom carpet. The nail polish is dark red, the carpet is cream coloured.
She immediately blotted it and tried warm water with no effect. We've tried acetone to remove it. It's helped on the lighter marks marginally.
Any other suggestions?

Do you know how much their excess is? Do you know how expensive their carpet was?
If you have accidental damage cover, then this is exactly the sort of thing that is covered. There will be an excess, as amersall rightly points out, but it's up to you to work out whether it's cost effective to you to make a claim. the insurers may decide to pay for professional carpet cleaning, but if that doesn't work they may opt to replace the carpet.
If you're not covered, or you don't think it's worth claiming, you could try more nail polish remover - little and often. Depending on where on the carpet this has happened, would a rug cover it? And finally, depending on the pile, and how big an area is affected, you could very carefully cut the worst of it away.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
You can to try Hairspray or Acetone free Nail polish remover as Acetone itself can actually stain the carpet, either way blot continually with kitchen paper and test a hidden area of carpet first.0

Rubbing alcohol is called surgical spirit in Britain, and can be purchased from your local chemist shop.0 -
When my sister did this, she tried nail polish remover, then bought a new bedside rug from a charity shop. No insurance fuss, & she can replace the carpet entirely when she chooses.
She's taken to storing her nailpolish in the fridge now - apparently it lasts better (& all spills on lino are So Much Easier!)0 -
About 4 years ago my wife spilled most of a bottle of red nail polish on a beige bathroom carpet. The stains spread over an area about 2 feet long by 6 inches wide.
Initially we covered up the stains with a rug.
A few months later I decided to attempt to remove the stains.
I used copious quantities of nail varnish remover (I'm not sure if it was acetone or acetone free). I soaked the stain for a minute or so and then blotted it up with kitchen paper. After a few repeats the stain disappeared.
I then cleaned the whole carpet with a Vax carpet cleaner.
When the carpet dried it was impossible to see where the stains had been. :beer:0 -
Wet the carpet first then use nail varnish remover.............worked for us

It is fortunate that you had a spare carpet.
