What needs to happen:
1)Mechanics should be trained and complete exams. They should then be a registered mechanic.
2)When you have a service you should be given a list of completed checks and jobs done. This should be signed together with the mechanics registration number.
3)If you are not happy with the work you can then complain to a regulator and they can check the quality of the work.
Just look at the gas safe register. If they can do it for gas installers then why not the same for mechanics?0 -

The only snag I can see with that though is that it's leading down the route of no DIY on cars.
Which from some of the things I've seen and heard of might not be such a bad thing.0
