"HMRC" phone call

The phone rang today and it was a recorded message in an American(ish) accent saying that I was being investigated by HMRC and I could press 1 to speak to someone.

So, I pressed 1 and got through to someone (with a foreign accent and a suspiciously English name) who asked who I was.

I said "You called me", so you should know.

He said "No, you called me - what do you want?".

You'd think they might've been a bit better prepared than that to run their scams, wouldn't you?

"I'm looking for a crap footballer and I don't want to pay any tax. Who would you recommend?"

HMRC will only call you if you have requested callback....if you are patient enough to wait in the queue to talk to someone in HMRC in the first place...dreading the next time I have to call them..

I must admit, I have always found HMRC to be helpful courteous and considerate.
