Thank you eskbanker, that is a really interesting and thought provoking response. It also gives me some added insight into why a complaint I've made to the Ombudsman on a completely unconnected issue with a different financial institution has been handled the way it has so far. I have to say, on reflection, that I've allowed my frustration at the 'unfairness' which is the subject of my own complaint to spill over into what I've posted on this thread.

In my own industry, everything we do is driven by fairness and equality - sometimes to the point that very little gets done because everybody is so busy analysing every possible consequence of what we are planning to do and how it impacts on every conceivable entity. If it is deemed unfair or unreasonable in any way then we go back to the drawing board and think of another idea. It sounds like banking has a very different way of doing things, which is not necessarily a bad idea.
