carpet underlay for open tread stairs

Hello, Can anyone recommend which type of underlay (waffle or polyurethane) is best to fit on this type of staircase? The underlay is to go under a good quality 80% wool carpet (a berber twist) and the carpet will be fitted to encircle each open tread.

We have always used the middle range green Tredaire waffle underlay in the past, but all our carpets were fitted well over 20 years ago using waffle underlay (polyurethane underlay didn't seem to exist then) and the only one that is showing any wear is the one on the stairs and this is only worn on the front edges of the tread so waffle underlay has served us well in the past.

Now however polyurethane underlay seems to predominate. Is the polyurethane as good as waffle, is it as durable and longlasting, or is it worth paying the extra for a high quality waffle?

Many thanks to anyone who can advise on this matter. kje.
