This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Morning all,
Brrrr its cold here today with a very sharp wind looks like winter although the sun is out !
Off to work for me I'm slowly getting back into it although I would much rather not have to go :rotfl:
Roast pork at mums tonight I know that beause I sent the meat and some veg up to her, I love a roast in the week but get in too late to cook one, so I am really looking forward to it.
Still not done an online shop so need to try and do that tonight and sweep round and put a wash on.
Rubbish and recycling today also the garden waste bin gets emptied which is great as we have a queue of stuff waiting to go in (we have done so much in the garden).
Right better get on have good days all xx

Morning all
Bright and sunny here but brrrr.
Off to work in a sec but I'm on countdown now until 27th October, my retirement date, I'll be 3 and a half weeks short of my 66th birthday, I have worked full time since I was 15, enough is enough!
Have a good day everyone.
Hugs HesterChin up, Titus out.0 -
Morning all
Chilly here this morning but no snow or rain thank goodness will be taking Dolly out in a bit .
We are up early as we had a text to say our friend sadly died early this morning which is such a shock as he was the best man at our friends wedding last Saturday and looked so well and happy .
Today I have a man coming round re our loft and i need to take DS to the gym I also need to make a shopping list as i just went shopping without one when we got home from holiday and i didn't realise we were so low on most things.
Dinner tonight will be freezer roulette
HH not long now and you can truly relax and enjoy your retirement.
Hugs to all those who need one x
Have a great day whatever you are up to x0 -
Bright here but very cold, we had snow and hail yesterday and I was trying to get back from work, for some reason it caused the traffic to back up. In a big city, that can be a *challenge*.
About to head off to work, not full of enthusiasm but heigh ho, another day, another dollar. Hester, I shall be 66 next month, if I could retire now, I
Today is the end of the week for me and a holiday on Monday so that's good.
The mice are back, saw two wee ones last night. So the traps are out, I feel horrid about this but the insanitary habits of mice worry me a bit.
OH and DS bought a very expensive artisan loaf yesterday and I am not keen, nor are they, I don't think they will be spending £3 on a loaf again, at least I sincerely hope not.
Tiredmum very sorry to read your sad news.
Have a good day, I must get shifting.I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0 -
Morning everyone.
Yesterday was a very bright and beautifully sunny day. Bitter wind still. This meant that my long day driving to Glasgow and back was glorious.
I managed to squeeze in visit to Costco whilst waiting so am stocked up with loo rolls, kitchen rolls etc.
When I got back I drove across to Crinan to meet my friends having their anniversary dinner to bring them back. Now I'm just about to get up for a teaching session though I'd love to sleep more!
Later today I'm going to look at a painting that I asked a local artist to do for me last year, so excited! It's of a Clyde puffer which used to chug up and down the west coast of Scotland delivering coal, animals and goods. If anyone can remember the Para Handy TV programme it's like that.
HH - I too have worked full time from the age of 16 (part time job at 15) until I 'retired' at 61. Despite having 46 years of NI contributions I was still two years short for the new State Pension which I don't get until 2019. I went back to teaching, mostly because I missed it, for four hours a week plus a couple of bits and pieces. Keeps my stamps going in and stop my brain totally freezing. Like you, I reckon I've done my bit and deserve to faff around now.
I've got lamb shanks for the rest of the week.
Happy Wednesday to all.
IN EDIT - just read about your friend tiredmum, so sorry. Sudden deaths like that are such a shock. Condolences.0 -
Morning folks and thanks RR for starting. Nice and sunny this morning but brr still a bit nippy.
We got back from the caravan early evening yesterday after a nice few days with very changeable weather! Sunday was spent sitting in the sunshine reading, then Monday the winter woollies were back on. We took the bus into Harrogate for a browse of the shops and treat ourselves to lunch. Yesterday, by heck, was colder still with a nithering wind blowing too. The mobile repairman arrived as promised on the dot of 10.00 to fit the new valve on the water heater. Poor chap had a right struggle before getting us back to running on gas. £200! Just one more dent in what's turning out to be an expensive year!
Today we have Mr TA's appointment that I have been dreading - with the neurologist for the result of the brain scan. As always with me, I am fearing the worst.
Have a good day folks if you can. Get well to Speky's leg and (HUGS) for KARCHER for whom life is a struggle just now. JACKIE you sound to be enjoying your holiday. Next time you must venture a bit further north to God's Own Country to meet more friendly folk and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales! Take care all and (HUGS) to those wanting/needing them. xx just read your news TM. So sorry about your friend."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -

Morning everyone,
Many condolences on the loss of your friend Tiredmum.
Will be thinking of you today TA and sending positive vibes.
Not much planned for today, tomorrow is DOH's birthday so I do want to get the house all clean and tidy then we can have the day to ourselves, have booked him a birthday lunch at a local pub that we both love.
Did have a bit of a move round in the living room yesterday, Mum always sat in the same little armchair and I felt it was time to change things round, the chair is in the office with a long forgotten throw on it and things now look different. All part of the process I guess, was reading some interesting posts on another thread and people were talking about grief, how they have been affected etc, I honestly think that it doesn't get easier you just learn to live with the pain and cope as best you can. Sorry, don't mean to bring the thread down.
Have a good day everyone, take care folks x0 -
Good morning everyone,
Cold one this morning.
Last night I took heed on the positive reports you all had of Dyson and bought a hoover for my flat in the Currys sale. Hopefully it'll last and be reliable - and if not then I've got a warranty.
Once again, no plans tonight. Although I recon I'll be paid today so I'll do my budgeting and buy a book.
Hester - I think they call that a well deserved break!
tiredmum - Sorry to hear of your loss.
TA - Fingers crossed for today
Lainey - Don't be silly. That's what we're here for.0 -
TA, I hope things go well at the hospital today.
Tiredmum, my condolences on your loss.
HH and AoD, I thoroughly agree you deserve to retire. I've been very lucky that DH is happy at work and able to support me well since I retired at 54.
Karcher, I hope you soon start to feel better.
JO, I second TA's proposal of the Dales. I'd never been here as an adult until 5 years ago, when DH,DS and DiL did an Oxfam walk (60miles in 30 hours, but that's another story). Being gluttons for punishment they did it again the following year by which time DH and I had fallen in love with the place. We decided to use a windfall to help buy a house and the rest is history, it's a magical place.
DH has just left to go on a walk - it's part of the Ride to Stride week here. He's taking the train up to Appleby and then will do a group walk returning by train this evening. I encouraged him to go because I haven' been up to doing much walking this week and he's been working on the house. It's been described as a strenuous, fast-paced 14 mile walk, so well beyond my capabilities.
I shall have a quiet day with maybe a trip to Lancashire to see my beloved aunt - another reason to be thankful for the Yorkshire house because I probably would hardly see her if we didn't have it.0
