wrong car taxed? incorrect car information in database?
Hello,
I'm going to buy a new car. At the moment its without MOT, a most likely SORN, anyway I agreed with trader that he do the basic repair and MOT, so I'll get the car ready to use.
While start to checking information, I found very strange thing on DVLA pages:
- MOT history showing correct car and the very same MOT test result as I saw in papers at trader office (gov uk -> check mot history)
- MOT status showing different car (different engine size, fuel and even color, also it seems to be newer car) - ( gov uk -> check mot status)
Emailed DVLA and they saying car is registered in their system as that second one (so completely wrong).
Few free "car check" pages can not found this car (similar as some pages for insurance quotes). some found it with some wrong details (for example comparethemarket finds it with MANUAL gearbox while its AUTOMATIC).
cardatacheck couk free check and paid on instantcarcheck couk said the car has different plates in the past - could it makes all that problems?
If I get this car - how to tax it, when it will again find me wrong car after the plates or won't find it at all?
How I can be sure this car is not a trap, stolen, cloned etc?
Sent e-mail to dealer and ask for a copy of V5C as well as told him about this issue... Will see what he'll answer.

It could have had a vanity plate then got a new plate when the cherished plate was removed. That might account for the discrepancy. Although DVLA are good and screwing up and claiming no knowledge.
It could be a headache to fix. If you have no money in the car i would walk away.
If you want it do a proper hpi check herefor £20 that will tell you the right information. The free ones are dubious at best.0 -
Plate change would be the obvious answer. and the MOT history site does have some... idiosyncrasies... in dealing with plate changes.
Could the reg on it be a "private" one?
What does the V5C say? Does the DocRef confirm as the most recent one on https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
Have you HPId it?
Does https://cazana.com show any plate change history?0 -
Thanks you guys for answers. I'm waiting for a scan/photo of V5C for trader.
The actual plates are "standard", but seems like this car used to have different, private plate in the past, which is now moved to different car.
Fallowing websites can find the correct car:
check-mot.service .gov.uk/
cardatachecks .co.uk/
cartaxcheck .co.uk/free-car-check/
cazana .com/ (anyway it saying there is only 1 previous owner, while there is 3 previous owners)
webuyanycar.com/Valuation/VehicleLookup (anyway it shows wrong engine, and rather a bit too early date of registration)
instantcarcheck.co.uk/ (paid here for check)
uswitch.com/car-insurance/
car.gocompare.com/vehicle (but it founds wrong type of gearbox, so same as on comparethemarket.co.uk)
CAN NOT FIND:
vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
Maybe only because its not taxed at the moment or DVLA have a lot of mess in the papers?
This car could be exported/imported in the past, how do you think, it is also explaining that situation?
Anyway it car fully prepared to drive on British roads (right hand, miles, its also popular model here)
It is helping me the car comes from trader?
Should I care the car is without TAX at the moment, or this is only a problem of current/last owner?0 -
Let someone else buy it and then they have the confusion. Plenty of other cars out there to buy.0

That's probably the single most important one. If it's not showing on there, then that is not the plate that DVLA think is on the car currently. This car could be exported/imported in the past, how do you think, it is also explaining that situation?
No.
Imported and exported cars all show just fine.Should I care the car is without TAX at the moment, or this is only a problem of current/last owner?
If it's with a trader, it won't be taxed. It's your responsibility to tax it when it's in your name.0 -

I also think this is most important one, this is why it confusing me, its actually the only place I can not find this car.
Well just call to them and they told me there is "no problem with this vehicle", it means the plate is correct with the model I've ask. Damn, forgot to ask why there is no such vehicle their web page then.
Maybe I just should grab that 20 pound HPI check and compare details with VIN/engine?
By the way, is there any psychical document I can keep which is showing I paid the road tax?0 -
Well, plenty of cars, but when you looking for a one of few certain models and have very limited budged... Not to mention looking for next one again loosing my time
Better than wasting time and money buying a wrong 'un.
If the exact specific car isn't for sale for the money you can afford, then hey-ho. Life moves on.By the way, is there any psychical document I can keep which is showing I paid the road tax?
They'll send you a text message and/or an email when you tax it.0 -
Been googling again and found interesting tip here:
dino.co.uk/labs/2015/getting-vehicle-details-could-not-be-found-on-the-dvla-vehicle-lookup-heres-a-solution/
So used again mycarcheck.com and copied Make & Model from this page (which was actually Mercedes Benz Clk200 - instead of automatic choice: Mercedes or Mercedes Benz) and search it again on vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/.... ta-da: the car is in database with all correct info. Well, now you know about what kind of car we speaking about.0
