Mothercare Gift Card

Hi
Looking for some advise, we recently had a collection at work for a colleague who's wife had a baby, I was in charge of going to Mothercare to get a gift card, I counted the collection on Thursday, when i was in mothercare on Saturday i recounted it and thought it was short by £25 which could only be in my car or in my house. I therefore purchase partial amount with the collection cash and the £25 on my debit card. I then called someone from work who told me it was the less £25 amount, i went back to the store for them to tell me that as the card has been loaded there is nothing they can do about it and that basically i need to grin and bear it.
From a consumer right stand point can they legally do this? Not actually sure how this can be right especially if i have not activated the gift card or scratched off the security number. Any advise......

They are right, there is no automatic right to allow unwanted returns and very few if any shops allow refunds of gift cards. It would have been better for you to ring your colleague before making up the difference than after.0

As above but with hindsight it may have been a far better idea to have purchased the lower amount gift card to start with then {if needed} bought a second one if you were correct with the "missing" £25. An expensive lesson I am afraid.0
