Couple's car insurance

I have become frustrated at feeling like a second class citizen on my car insurance. We have one car but the way insurance is set up one of us ends up with fewer rights than the other. For example, I can't drive other cars, only one of us is covered to drive to work, I don't get any no claims. If I became the main driver my husband would just have these problems, so that won't really help. We're not going to take out separate policies, and pay twice. It's only one car, only one of us can be driving it at a time! Is there any kind of couple's insurance, so we can be treated equally?

How old are you? We're with RIAS (for the over 50s) with Mr S listed as 'main driver' and me as 'regular driver'. This keeps my no-claims going - although I'm not sure if I'm covered to drive anyone else's car.

Proper NCD is only awarded to the policyholder, and the other benefits you feel you miss out on are usually only bestowed upon the policyholder

However as you have realised it is much cheaper for you to be "just" a named driver than go to the expense of buying your own policy.

(That is your only option if you really want the benefits of being a policyholder)

(Speak to a local broker - not Swinton - who should be able to find you policies that allow all drivers to commute)

Most policies allow commuting use for a named driver (can't recall actually seeing one that doesn't!) and as you are married, depending on your occupation you should even be able to get business use! I can't see much use in insuring it twice for what you would get in return. I think, as Quentin suggested, you need to speak to a broker you can arrange you a decent policy. Some may even be able to get you a policy that allows you, as a spouse/named driver, to get the driving other cars TP extension. Not sure there's much you can do about the NCB though, apart from that fact that if you ever need to get your own car, various insurers will take your experience into account and allow you an "introductory" NCB.

Are you sure that's correct? I'm saying it's not, I've just never heard of a policy that preserves a named drivers NCB as long as they are noted as a "regular driver"?

All RIAS "may" do for named drivers regarding discount is give them an "introductory bonus" if they take out their own policy.

If your NCD isn't out of date (ie less than 2/3 years "old") then you can preserve it properly by alternating who buys the policy each year with your husband.

But if it's more than 3 years old then you won't be able to use it on your own policy

Privilege give a named driver up to 5 years NCD if that person takes out a separate policy with them.
