Just had the renewal through from More Than for our 6 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, shes never been ill and I've never made a claim, and just had her renewal through for £70 a month, is this normal?
I went with them as I read on here people were impressed with them, but was wondering what I should be paying a month/year??
Seems a lot to me!

Gosh that does seem expensive. My greyhound turns 8 this year and her renewal with MoreThan was £27. I started it when she was 2 at £21 so in 6 years its not increased that much. I know generally Cavs are an unhealthy breed so I would expect them to be higher, but £70 seems a lot.
Might be worth looking around, checking others. It's best to get it changed before she gets to 8 as a lot won't insure after 8 years old.I just enter and forget...hoping to win something!0 -
Premiums are set reflecting breed, age and post code ( vet fees vary )
Cavaliers are prone to several health problems so the premiums will be set accordingly.
You do not say what you were paying already. How much is the increase on premium?
You can do quotes on line for other companies to compare prices.0 -
Zara's jumped to 259 per month - at that point I just had to cancel0

I thought I'd replied to this post , but obviously the internet/computer was playing up.
I've had four cavaliers and never had dog insurance. The two I no longer have both had MVD and were diagnosed around the age of 7. One I lost just short of 9, before Vetmedin was widely used, but the second lived to nearly 14 , only had symptoms for his last 18 months and the meds , at their highest for his last two months were only about £50 (mostly bought online, except for one 'human' drug) and he was a very big boy, so needed larger doses.
I'm luckier with the current two, aged 14 and 13, as the younger is still heart clear and the older one's murmur has no symptoms.
A retired vet, who ran a cavalier forum advised us that she thought it best to have a dog fund instead of insurance and had advised her clients likewise. She said, as I found , that medication often cost less than the insurance.0 -

I see this stated so often - what would you do if your dog needed a double hip replacement at a cost of over 14 k? Or both cruciates operated on at similar cost? Meds can be bought cheap online true but is it not only meds pet owners have to worry about. Zara's MRI was 1500 alone (spine)
I do not believe in "money pots" instead of proper, decent insurance cover unless you are rich.0 -
A dog fund is fine when you have built up a sizeable amount but until then what do you do about a large bill. Unless you have access to a sum of money , by way of savings, credit card or loan you are in trouble.
I currently pay £26 a month for each of my dogs.
One is 12 and I have never claimed. But, living on a retirement income I have peace of mine that if he develops an ongoing condition I am covered.
The other is 8 and has had a cruciate repair done. The cost of xrays and surgery was more than I have paid the insurance over the years so I am still quids in with her.
I compromised with another dog and paid for lower cover but also put money away to build up a larger sum if needed. In his case it was not needed.0
