stabilising broadband speed??

I read somewhere on this forum that when you start using your b/band connection the exchange recognises the usage and the line speed can improve.
My speed drops dramatically at times and I wondered if it was because we turn the router etc off when it's not in use.
Might it be better if I leave it on for longer? ;)
My ISP is supanet giving me up to 8Meg-with a netgear wireless router and running XP.
My d/load speed can be as good as 4.37 Mb/s with 0.42 Mb/s up,or as slow as 0.96 Mb/s down and 0.3 Mb/s up.
My netgear spec tells me that my modem is good for 7328 and 448.AND I only live 2km from the exchange.
Any advice please?:D or is this as good as it gets.

18.40 Just ran broadband choice speedtest and it,s 0.37 down and 0.02 up.-smoke signalling would be faster!!

    it's probably congestion or throttling.
I feel like doing some throttling myself  but is there anything I can do ??

Would it be my ISP or B/T that's responsible?
  • ISP, if it goes slow between 4pm - midnight, it's not your equipment.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yes, you need to leave it on for the first ten days.

I have been with supanet for 3 months , is it too late to do that now ,or is there a way round it??
  • A quick squint over at the supanet forum at thinkbroadband - slow speeds seem to be a bit of an issue.
No need to keep router on 24/7 but the least amount of switching off and on the better.
Keeping the pedants at bay - dot an i or cross a t only if you feel you really can't stop yourself:p

Wish i'd seen that forum before I switched-when asked supanet sales about throttling and traffic managing they said they didn't do it:mad:

Is there anyway I can stop the server timing out on these long waits??;)
  • Then sales were lying to you.

I phoned tech support today and told the guy that I was getting latencies/pings in games in excess of 150ms consistently, and download speeds on a par with dialup (just tried to download something off Steam - a well supported gaming download client - it downloaded at 15kb/s which is horrendous for an 8MB connection!). He had the cheek to tell me that 140ms was BETTER than most people on their service because of their traffic throttling.

Now how is that meant to make me feel better? And today i've just found out that I will have to pay 39.99 to leave supanet next month even though my 12 month contract is expiring. I'll also have to return the usb modem which they sent me (advertised as FREE) when I joined 11 months ago that I never used because I have my own ADSL router. If I don't return it I get charged £30 for an old piece of technology that you can buy online for a fiver!!!

These guys are nothing other than cowboys - their service is of no use to anyone unless you happen to be nocturnal or only require the net for browsing the web or collecting emails (albeit very, very slowly).

Is there anything that can be done about them? Thinking about it just makes me mad... I detest profiteering ISPs like them who hide behind outsourced call centres and badly worded T&Cs

    One annoyed money saver...

Problem is certainly with your ISP.

  • The post by A Hackett rang lots of familiar bells with myself and 2 sisters. I was told by them (Supanet) in an email that even though my services with them had ceased I still had to cancel the Broad Band. This took 2 calls to them which left me on hold for a total of 2Hrs and 40Mins. I got a letter this morning from them telling me I owed them £0 for remainder of contract, £39.99 for cancellation withing 24 month period, Disconnection fee £0, Current outstanding amount £18.34 = Total of £58.33.. I only see the months outstanding fee as ok in luau of 1 months notice perhaps. How do I owe them anything else when they clearly state my contract was finished and owed then nothing for that. How can you have a 12 month contract that states you cannot cancel within 24 months .. is it me or does that defy logic? How can you ever get out of such a loop... Again I am also "ordered" to return a modem which actually died some time ago or be billed yet again. As A Hackett states it was advertised as free if taken for 12 months. Surely its illegal to advertise anything as free if it is dependant on a sale or in this case a min contract term. I and my 2 sisters are jumping with rage

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Just a quick question - any particular reason why you turn the router off? They are designed to be left on.
