How do you relocate?

My husband and I are hoping to relocate back up north, 250 miles away, to be closer to family. We've started looking at possible employers in the area. But how do you do it when you're a home owner? It seems like a logistical nightmare and i don't know how people do it. We own our house which is mortgages, in a fixed term…

If you're both looking for jobs, it might be that whoever finds one first needs to rent a room/stay with family temporarily while the other one finds a job. It's a known problem in academia, where moves are frequent and jobs are scarce to make things even more complicated - look up "academic two body problem". There might be some useful advice in amongst the moaning!
