Under 18 and refused account???

Hi my step son is 16 and was invited by lloyds to close his savings book and open a account with cash card but after closing his account they told him they were unable to open the new account and couldn't give a reason why?? His brother is 15 and at the same address who also got a letter successfully closed his old account and opened his new account on the same day.
He has since tried two other banks with the same response and we are at a loss. He has all the correct ID. Any suggestions 😊

    What ID was provided?
Were you introducing him to Lloyds and are you a Lloyds customer?

    Your stepson previously had this?

It seems rather odd that there should be a problem with his opening a new account with Lloyds and also that he has been refused accounts with two other banks.

Are there any problems in his banking background?

What exactly do you mean by ''Lloyds invited to close his savings account?''
Was he told to close it- it seems very odd that they would not have opened the new account first - then close off the young saver account balance into it.

Are you sure no funny monies have been passed through the saver account?

If there was they certainly wouldn't "invite" him to close it!

Might be a term of phrase the OP used but he comes back with some answers we will probably never know.
  • ID used was passport and a letter from school
  • Never had any issues with his savers account and they wrote to him advising him that he could change the account over

What was the letter from school for?
  • They typed one as requested by the bank to show his name and address. It just stated he is who he said and that he attends their school

As he has been turned down by three banks at the age of 16 there is clearly some sort of problem but I am finding it very difficult to imagine what that problem might be.

Perhaps you might visit a branch of a bank/building society with him?

    Have you tried Nationwide?
