Thanks for the link, will take a look. Yes, they had to intervene at some level, but the lengths they have gone to (the absolute refusal to allow Greece to default for example) have come at a political cost, and that genie can`t be put back in the bottle IMO. Breaking up the big banks, clawing back bonus/pensions, and even prosecution/jail sentences for guilty bankers would have been very appealing to the UK voting public IMO.
You're in for a shock when you read it, as to how complicit Brown was in the creation of the whole RBS mess.

Anyway, in case you hadn't noticed, the UK is not a Euro country, so had no part in Greece at all.

I`ve been reading about GB on the HPC website for years, I seriously doubt I will be shocked. As to the political swing, I was talking about voters across Europe, US and UK, and IMO it is a stretch to believe that events in Greece did not have any bearing on people`s views on the established political/financial powers.

Just read what the OP wrote that is was lower rent for cleaning and decorating it didn't say it was a low rent for modernising the entire property. I think the first 3 years at a saving of £100 per year off the rent was good value for cleaning and decorating. You can get a lot of tins of paint and bottles of bleach for £300.

Having given the discount for 3 years to allow the cost of the paint and cleaning materials doesn't mean that the landlord is obliged to go on giving the discount. The OP didn't have to rent a property that needed cleaning and decorating.

With respect, your figure of 300.00 is much less that what I have paid in the past. I have replaced the carpets throughout - of necessity, replaced a broken window, new kitchen flooring (not fantastic admittedly but better than the cracked and broken tiles), had the roof on the outside room repaired, attended to the upkeep and maintenance of the garden, replaced the light fittings which were ancient and smoke stained and much more. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear in my original post?

Thank you for your replies on the whole. I understand and accept what most of you have said. I did bring it up with the agent who's representative inspected the property prior to the new agreement being signed. As I now understand it was her suggestion that the LL increase the rental even by such a low amount. Apparently he had no intention of putting the rent up. Just goes to show. Clearly he is happy with me as he could have made it a higher amount I suppose. It is the second increase I have had though, I think I forgot to mention that although they have both been the same amount. Unfortunately my salary has not increased accordingly. Oh well. I tried. At least I wasn't always poor.
