1st time car insurance for a 50 year old

My sister wants to buy my car, she's 51 years old & is just in the process of taking her test. I've been getting her some insurance quotes & am absolutely shocked at the cost. The quotes cost almost as much a month as I am paying for the whole year! Also, the excess is coming up on all the quotes at £3000!. I've tried a couple of the price comparison sites & Aviva, does anyone have any suggestions to get this insurance down to a more acceptable level? The car is a VW Passat estate. Thanks

Sounds like you've done everything all ready re price sites, maybe the Passat is not the right choice for her and you need to sell it to someone else. Try quotes for differs cars.0

Follow the mse article "cheap car insurance' (link in the quick links) at top of page for tips on reducing premiums. (Eg add a mature driver with a clean history as a named driver even if they will never drive)0

Tried that - got 2 quotes from Confused.com & put myself on 1 of the quotes (clean licence, driving for 40 years) and the insurance with the same company was cheaper without me on it!0

Passat, is that the 1.9 TDI?
Perhaps something that engine size isn't best for a new driver.
50+ is when car insurance can begin to creep up again.
Try a local broker (not Swinton) as they may have access to schemes not available direct.
Also perhaps some over 50's providers (personally I'd avoid Saga though).0 -
Insurance has risen this year it seems, but a large diesel estate is probably the worst choice for a first car if its cheap insurance you want.
Diesels tend to cost more, estates tend to cost more. Excess of £3000? Comparison sites i tried topped out at £1000 excess.
And putting that amount often increased the premiums. £250 - £500 was where it was usually the cheapest.
But it can vary a lot.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
