We had very little money when my four children were young and we made one from old childrens socks (sifted through for wintery colours...i.e. red/black/grey) and pegged (cheap wooden pegs) onto a piece of gardening twine. I hand sewed (but you could glue) a number on each from an old check shirt one of the boys had.
It looked really rustic and old worldly lol and most importantly CHEAP0 -
Two suggestions... Avon seem to have done one each year, don't think they were too expensive. A square of fabric hung on some dowling with pockets on the front, large enough for a chocolate or a coin.
Or
You could make one. I like the stocking idea above, but I used to do a 'lucky dip' idea from a sack, some pressies chocolates, some tokens for services eg bake their favourite cake etc.

If you're into crafty stuff, Cl always seem to have interesting home-made advent calendars. Usually involves a container (bucket, vase whatever) with various length festive twigs (sometimes sprayed silver or gold) on each of which is hung handmade little pockets containing tiny pressies or chocolates.
The one I saw last year had 25 tiny little baby booties. Too cute. I daren't do that one in case my MIL gets the wrong idea and gets over excited
I've also seen some magazines recycle it at Easter and hang little easter eggs off it.
Have a look in the library at some of the Christmas craft books. They usually have some kind of advent calendar project to make. Also worth checking out some of the American sites like Martha Stewart's Living and Country Living as American ladies are very fond of their crafts."carpe that diem"0 -

Looks like a nice one. My mum makes my brother, my sisters and myself one of these every year (and my ex husband when we were together) and it costs her a small fortune. I'm doing her one this year.saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.
We're 29% of the way there...0 -

You can make one with felt bags stick on numbers and nice twisted ribbon to hand from with pegs. Ikea have a mixed pack of ribbon for 3.99.
Or try ebay they do personalised ones for 3.99 and 3.48 postage.
