Selling motorbike - dodgy buyer?
Hi
I'm selling my motorbike as I need to fall back on just running a car due to costs, and I've received the below request that just seems... dodgy. If I get the money via PayPal what's the risk here? I'd be really grateful for some experienced thoughts on this
<<
I want you to consider this a deal as i am willing to pay your full asking price! i actually want to buy it for a family member who is urgently in need of it, i have checked through your posting and i'm fully satisfied with it.
Unfortunately, i would not be able to come personally to view/collect, i work offshore as an instructor on a oil rig so i don't have time at all, but like i said i am 100% OK with the advert. With the issue of transferring of details, ownership and all paperworks will be done by the courier service company so you don't have to worry about that.
I will pay you via PayPal once you are ready and send my courier agent to collect after you have fully received your money as that is the only means of payment available to me at the moment.
I will contact the courier agent now so please get back to me with a suitable collection time.
>>
Many thanks
Dave

This is a very very old scam, if you put a few keywords into Google it will all be explained.
Have you ever used paypal, have you seen the requirement for tracked delivery confirmation to the buyer? Without that buyer gets the bike and merely reclaims their money and you can do nothing at all about it.
Just for information and for other newbies reading there are variations on this scam involving fake Western Union payments or bank payments as well , although they are less used now as most people recognise them as scams.
Wherever it was that you used and got that message, report it to the admin as the 'buyer' is almost certainly sending that same message to dozens of other people as well on the off chance that someone will fall for it.

It's not from a buyer, it's from a thief.0

I listed an MG Montego on a site and had one of these replies, the car was £2500, he would pay me £4500, could i give the guy fetching my car £1500, i could keep the balance
The cheque arrived........from Nigeria, a company cheque from a London company
I banked it and watched my account
Sure enough it cleared, the same day the phone rang from a London number, i didnt pick it up, 24 hours later the £4500 was taken out my bank and I had a letter saying the cheque had been stolen.
Seems office cleaning teams look for cheque books to rob..Now we all know how it felt to play in the band on the Titanic...0 -
