At the moment our broadband provider is Virgin Media. I would like a wireless router in the room to be used. Connecting the main pc (mine) to OH laptop, which is 2 years old. We did get an 02 internet thing which was like a card we could put in the side and eject to connect to the internet but got rid, wasnt using it much.
I am not very clued up on the whole software we need but do most recent laptops come wireless ready? If so how do i find this out? Start, menu etc will it tell me there...
Dont wanna install cards right left and centre as like i say i have never done anything inside the pc, and would only bust it, likewise not wanting to pay someone to do it for me, so an easy option if there is one?
Can the other pc get my files this way or do they remain private?
Any suggestions from Tesco Direct would be great. No real budget in mind, but under 80 quid would be ideal.

you can run your pc wired to the wireless router.thats what i do as it saves any issues on the main machine.
then you have wireless for the laptop.
as long as you set encyption on the wifi its fine, this is done simply on the configuration page on the pc so nothing really techy
even VM supply routers such as this

Is this one any good? It wll mostly be used on the other side of the bedroom at best or on the top landing. Being USB is that much easier? So i connect it to the main broadband box supplied by virgin and connect to my pc and once all configued it transmits data to the usb in my pc which i presume transfers to the laptop...0 -
Bumping this back up

cant say one way or t'other on philips.
yeah basically you plug the lan connection from the modem to the router.
then you plug the little wifi dongle into the pc's USB port.
usually the router will come with a config CD to get it all set up0 -
Cool well may aswell go for that one i think...
I cant find their laptop just now, must be at work with them. How do i know if it is capable of wireless? Can i start via device manager??ta

if you go into control panel it usually shows wifi, bluetooth etc in network & internet
if you plug the usb dongle into the laptop(even if your not using it long term) it will bring up a wifi wizard or the like.
also in device manager you should see a wifi card or not as the case may be0 -
Ok well as soon as i am able to i will check it out.
Many thanks.0 -
when you get it i would set up the main pc temporarily on a wired connection.
set up the router and configure wifi etc then try it on the laptop.
that way you still have net for problem solving help0
