Contactless not working

I tried using my contactless card to pay for an item that is less than £30, and it didn't work at the terminal. The shop mentions card machine is working fine. In the end, I used the chip and pin method to pay for the item, and it went through. Bank says their systems are ok.

I did use the contactless functionality in the morning today for breakfast. The second time today was paying for an item in the early evening (see above).

Why does contactless not work all of a sudden?

I wouldn't worry about it, if it's just been that one time. I've had terminals not allowing contactless on a good few occasions, which I suspect has been the merchant's issue rather than mine. Shop staff are generally quite ignorant to the intricacies of their chip and PIN terminals.

From time to time you will have to enter your PIN for security reasons. Not the shops fault, it's just your bank checking it's the owner of the card using it.

To stop fraudulent transactions at some point if you lose your card.

I tried to use three different TSB cards contactless and the Tesco terminal asked for PIN on all three (discussed elsewhere), but a fourth card from Co-op did work contactless , so it was a TSB security measure and not a system fault.
