    Tone is how much neural signal the muscle is getting. Too much tone at rest causes muscles to be held too tight and results in poor range of movement and a lack of resting tone often causes a muscle to refuse to work when it is needed. Both contribute to poor posture and an increased risk of injury.

    It does affect appearance (tense your abs and they look different) but it shouldn't be a goal of the average workout unless you've consulted a physio or sports therapist.

    Most trainees should worry about muscle mass/shape (lifting weights) and body fat (cardio and diet) the combination of which is often confusingly referred to as 'tone' but I think 'definition' is a better word to avoid the kind of confusion occurring in this thread.

    OP, for a healthy lifestyle do a bit of both and don't forget the stretching and mobility to balance it all out! :j
