Tracking Royal Mail 2nd class

A 2nd class small parcel sent with RM has not arrived.
The tracking says it was delivered on the 18th, the recipient says it wasn't and has opened a case.
Royal Mail phone help says
there is no tracking on second class parcels
I cannot dispute the tracking because it does not happen
the reference number is in the wrong format for RM tracking
the RM website page I am looking at must be wrong.

Because they don't have tracking and don't keep records they cannot help, nor could the delivery office. I must wait 15 days and then claim compensation.
I don't want compensation, I should prefer the parcel to be found and delivered, but I believe that the further we get from the delivery date, the less likely anyone is to remember what happened.
Can anyone suggest how I can dispute or query the alleged delivery?

How can RM say they have no tracking if you can see it as delivered?
It could well be with a neighbour - have you asked the recipient to check. Neighbours can often be weird, holding onto parcels and not telling the recipient they have it.0 -
Did you pay for signed for service? If not I don't think Royal Mail class regular post as a tracked service?0

What happens when you go into the case and update the tracking by putting in the number?Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0

Is this the new system where all parcels handed over the counter get bar coded and show delivery but no tracking through the system ? The track and trace page now asks to input a 9-27 character number instead of the old ending in GB quote.
If you have proof of postage with that number on then you are protected from a Paypal claim.0 -
If online tracking shows this as delivered then you are protected from any claims (assuming it was for a sold item). Small parcels now come with delivery confirmation (not tracking). You can see when its been delivered but you can't see where it is before that.
Really RM customer service staff should have explained the difference between delivery confirmation and tracking.
I worry if you claim for a lost parcel then they may refuse it based on they have delivery confirmation.0 -

If its scanned as delivered on a 2D then I expect is is delivered (at least somewhere)0 -

You do NOT need TRACKING for eBay or Paypal cases. You need PROOF OF DELIVERY.
The new QR codes on parcels give POD.
Add the QR code number (you call it tracking) to the case.0 -
I have added the tracking to the case.
I do believe the buyer and will refund, if he ever confirms his address.
I will not be claiming compensation, it's far too fiddly for a refund of the postage only.
But I am shocked that a customer service person on the Royal Mail's help line knows less about the system than contributors here.
Or perhaps I would have got a different result if I had used the phrase delivery confirmation instead of tracking.
I can always ring again tomorrow and see if that helps.
Thanks to all for your suggestions.0 -

I don't quite follow you, what have RM said that is wrong? The new system for standard parcels is NOT tracked , it merely has confirmation of delivery. What other result do you want?
As item shows as delivered you wouldn't be able to claim compensation anyway. If item didn't show as delivered then using proof of postage you would have been able to claim the item cost plus postage.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I sent a dvd 1st class standard, but printed through ebay and it had one of these QR codes on the label.
The buyer is saying it's not been delivered.
Is there any way to track these?I Hate Jobsworths!!!0
