It wouldn't surprise me if that collision was a result of the power steering failing!
I had a Diesel Meriva for a time. A practical car and easy to drive. However, not that reliable.
Problems, fixed under warranty, included - failed power steering (a common fault which requires a complete new steering column because the torque sensor stops sensing), failed steering rack requiring complete replacement (apparently the wrong lubrication was used by the maker which results in a "groan" from the steering), two replacement radio c.d. units (unreliable German rubbish), replacement key fobs x 2 (they fell to pieces) and after only a month from new, peeling paint from both sills along their entire length which required a respray of the affected area.
All not the end of the world stuff and fixed at no cost. But on a car less than 12 months old quite unaccepable and inconvenient.
Oh, yes rattling from inside all four side doors which was also sorted by the supplying dealer. Initially Vx factory, in Spain I think, built the wrong car, not in accordance with the original order. I don't know what happened to that after delivery to the dealer? It did delay the final delivery by about four months.0 -

Diesels will be here for a long time yet, simply far too many on the roads and it's only the old dirty ones being targeted and for certain types of driver they are better than petrol, someone will just invent one with less NOx pollution coupled with lower CO2 and on we goSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

Id back a huge hike in Fuel duty on diesel making them dearer to run than petrols (when in fact they already are dearer, with higher purchase prices, costlier servicing and repair bills that have more zeros than Pearl Harbor).
Plus the UK is now 4 weeks short of diesel production due to the huge amount of folk who buy them for 100/miles a week.
Brexit might help.... 90% of the UK's diesels are European, stop them importing or add Import tax I say.0 -
Ref the fuel duty hike............. transport (HGV/PSV) could be rebated, tractors already are exempt almost (red diesel)
