Move Electricity Meter?

  • I'm now in a similar position where I need to get both gas and electricity meters moved. I'm going round in circles as everyone is saying different things.
UKPower Networks and Cadent Gas are the distributors and they say that they must move the pipes and cables going into the meters and the suppliers can move the meter.
The suppliers say they can do the whole thing as long as it is less than 1m. Anything more than this then you have to go to the distributor.
Citizens Advice Bureau ratifies what the suppliers have said. I.e., 1m - go to supplier. >1m go to distributor.

The distributors are quoting prices starting at £1600 inc VAT to move up to 5m and they are adamant that even if you want to move the meter 1 inch, you must go through the distributor and the full charge for £1600 applies. For each. And you have to pay for the supplier to come and move the meter and connect it up again. And the suppliers are not allowed to move the pipes or cables going into the meter.

The suppliers say they can do the whole thing up to 1m and prices vary from £80 - £130 all in.

Has anyone had it moved by just the supplier?

As stated supplier meter moves do not free up the area and there will still be a connection from the old point to the meter position.

As for DNO work, it depends on how much you want them to do.

I paid a few hundred for a electric meter to an outside box a while back (prices not changed much).

However they expected the box (and conduits etc) in places and all my side sorted ready for them.
