Sending £ cheque to USA

As title, I want to send a cheque to USA drawn on a NatWest current account in £ sterling. This cheque will reduce the balance to zero.
For various reasons this is the only way I wish to send the money.

Now when the bank in the states sends it back to NatWest U.K.there will obviously be a charge this end. Anyone know if it is taken out of the dollars sent back or out of the current account.
Thanks for any help.

If you can find a US bank that will accept such a cheque, they will be the ones who deduct their charges and cost of clearing from the resulting USD funds.

If you mention the reasons for choosing this method, suitable alternatives that you had not considered may be suggested.

I am pretty sure all charges will be taken from the original amount thus decreasing the amount that the recipient gets. It's just common sense really...

Is there any reason to suppose that an American bank will accept the cheque ?

When I tried to use a british cheque in the US branch of the same UK bank they simply refused to accept the cheque.

Well, the Americans are very keen on sending their USD 'checks' all over the world - instead of making a bank transfer.

That said, I think in UK not all currencies are accepted and some banks/BSs (e.g. Nationwide) don't accept foreign cheques.
